How to Change Margins in Google Docs: A Quick Guide

Grant Kiely · Last Updated: April 4, 2025

You can adjust margins in Google Docs using two methods

1. Using Page Setup

  • Open your document.
  • Click on File > Page setup.
  • Enter values for Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margins.
  • Click OK to apply.

2. Using the Ruler

  • Make sure the ruler is visible: View > Show ruler.
  • To adjust margins, hover over the gray areas on the ends of the ruler.
  • When the cursor changes to a double arrow, click and drag to set the margin.

Tip: Page Setup offers precise control; the ruler allows quick, visual adjustments.

Additional Notes

  • Margins can be set in inches or centimeters, depending on your locale settings.
  • To change the unit of measurement, go to File > Settings, and under the "General" tab, select your preferred unit.
  • The default margins in Google Docs are 1 inch on all sides. You can revert to these in Page Setup.
  • Google Docs does not allow different margin settings for specific sections of a document. Workarounds like using tables or adjusting paragraph indentation can create a similar visual effect.
  • If you need to revert to default margins, go back to File > Page setup, and click on the Set as default button after adjusting the margins to your liking.
  • For more advanced layout options, consider using tables or text boxes to control the placement of text and images within your document.

Troubleshooting

  • If the ruler is not visible, ensure it is enabled by going to View > Show ruler.
